When one thinks about superheroes the imminent context is super powers because in almost every superhero movie, whether it is Spiderman, Ironman, Superman or Captain America, our hero uses his superpowers to save the day and the world from the evil which would destroy it. Well did you know that those same superheroes also have superpowers when it comes to the stock markets? With billions in sales at the box office under the Marvel brand, superpowers are a strong power behind Disney’s stock. With every new superhero movie that is released, it would seem that Disney is simply on an unstoppable roll, rising ever higher. Today, we will discuss the billions of superhero-propelled dollars that Disney has earned, is earning and will earn, and how it makes the Disney stock even more appealing.
Superheroes save the day
Disney posted record breaking profits in its third quarter, powered there by the world’s favorite superheroes. Looking back, it was one of the smartest moves in the entertainment world when Disney acquired Marvel in 2009, because that deal has been paying off tremendously for them ever since. For example, though it’s been more than two years since the Avengers movie was released to critical acclaim it is still earning mega bucks for Disney, with more than $1.5 billion in sales worldwide. However, the individual heroes are no slackers for Disney in the revenue department either, with Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and Captain America all pulling in their fair share with their own movie spin-offs and, in some cases, sequels. Let’s look at “Captain America: Winter Solder”, which was released in early April; the superhero movie starring Chris Evans has so far pulled in nearly $260 million and has been the number one movie in box office sales thus far for this year. But it’s not just the traditional superheroes that have helped Disney, but also super-villains and heroes of a kinder, gentler sort. Take for instance Angelina Jolie, who played the starring role in Maleficent; that movie has earned $236 million since May 30 th . The cartoon Frozen became a mega-hit with the toddler and “tween” set (and their parents, of course), with unlikely heroines in Anna and Elsa and blockbuster Oscar-winning songs (Let it Go; Frozen has earned $400 million since its release last November.
Now, Disney (through Marvel) has released another superhero kind of movie, with not so conventional superheroes (if you can consider a raccoon a hero, that is); Guardians of the Galaxy opened only last week and already it has brought in $188 million and the reviews are suggesting this could be this summer’s blockbuster hit. And with each and every blockbuster hit profits for Disney rise. And with more profits for Disney, the Disney stock price could move higher and higher. Which is really what we care about, right?
